FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India which is a corporation that governs and monitors the food business in India. This organization is a self-ruling body that is established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, Which is responsible for promoting and protecting people’s health through the supervision and regulation of food safety in India.

Types Of FSSAI License

There are three types of FSSAI Licenses.

a) Basic Registration for FSSAI License

The annual income of less than Rs. 12 lakh of food businesses.

b) State FSSAI License

Annual income is more than Rs. 12 lakh but less than Rs. 20 crore of food businesses.

c) FSSAI Central License

Annual income is more than Rs. 20 crore of food businesses.

Who Should Register for Food License?

FSSAI issues food licenses to food business owners throughout India. Everyone who works in the food business involves in the manufacture, storage distribution, processing, sale of food products must obtain an FSSAI Registration or license.

Kinds of Businesses that Require FSSAI Registration/License

The following kinds of business compulsory to obtain an FSSAI Registration/License:

1. Small retailers and shops such as Retail Shop, Snacks shop, Confectionery or Bakery Shop, etc.

2. Fixed stall or Temporary stalls or food premise involved in the preparation, distribution, storage, and sale of food products such as Bread pakoda stall, Chinese food stall, Gol Gappa stall, Samosa stall chat stall, fruits/vegetable vendors, juice shops, Tea Stall, snacks stall, South Indian food stall, sweet stall, etc.

3. Fish Processing and Meat Processing units.

4. Refrigerator / Cold storage facility.

5. Restaurants, Hotels, and Bars.

6. Vegetable Oil Processing Units.

7. E-Commerce food suppliers including cloud kitchens.

8. Hawkers sell packaged or freshly prepared food on the go (usually on foot or in carts) from one place to another.

9. Dairy Units including Small Milkman, Milk Chilling Units, and Milk Vendors.

10. Slaughtering house such as a mutton shop, lamb meat, chicken shop, meat shop, etc.

11. Cafeteria and Canteens include mid-day snacks.

12. Novel food and Proprietary food.

13. All production/processing units including food repacking.

14. Food Sales Agencies and Caterer.

15. Wholesaler, supplier, distributor, and marketer of food products.

16. Exporters and importers of food items including food ingredients.

17. Transport of food products having a number of specialized vehicles like milk tankers, food trucks, insulated refrigerated van/wagon, food wagons, etc.

18. Banquet halls with food catering arrangements, Dhaba, Home Based Canteens, PG providing food, and Food stalls in fairs or religious institutions.

Process For How To Get Food License

Steps involved for how to get a food license:-

1. FSSAI registration begins with the submission of Form A ( Application for Registration) or Form B (Application for central and state license ) to the Department of Food and Security or by applying online on the FoSCoS portal.

2. The application must be accompanied by the required documentation. It must be submitted to the Department of Food and Safety or uploaded online on the FoSCoS portal at the time of filling the application.

3. This application may be approved or rejected by the Department within 7 days from the date of receipt of an application and the rejection has to be informed to the applicant in writing.

4. If the application is approved, the department will issue a registration certificate with the registration number and photograph of the applicant.

5. FBO should clearly display the registration certificate in the place of business during working hours.

FSSAI License Fee

Validity of 5 years: Rs. 5000

Validity of 4 years: Rs. 4200

Validity of 3 years: Rs. 3400

Validity of 2 years: Rs. 2700

Validity of 1 year: Rs. 2000

Renewal of Food License

It is important to renew the license. The license is issued for a period of one to five years, so the entity must apply for renewal 30 days before the expiration of the current license.
